UNDERGRADUATE

STUDIES

Welcome to the Undergraduate Program in Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology. Students wishing to study the function of cells and organisms at the molecular level elect to major in biological sciences with a concentration in BCMB. The curriculum prepares students for a variety of careers in biological research, biotechnology, the health professions, and education. BCMB is one of four biology majors that share a common, core curriculum; the other biology majors are Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), Microbiology, and Biology of Global health. You can learn more about the core courses at the General Biology Program website and also view the Requirements for a BS in BCMB online.

WHY BCMB?

Our majors are highly motivated students who boast a good track record of success after graduating, proceeding on to careers in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sales, education, and graduate training in biological sciences, medicine, pharmacy, and other fields. Go here for links to sites about careers in biology.

General Biology

Our faculty, support staff and graduate teaching  assistants are dedicated to introducing students to the world of Biology. Ask questions, challenge conventions, be skeptical, demand more of us – we’ll all grow and learn together. Click below to learn more about General Biology courses.

VolsTeach

The VolsTeach program is open to all incoming freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in four years with a degree in math or science and a teaching license. If you can envision yourself in the important role of educating America’s next generation in math and science, then this is an opportunity you should explore.

Research

Undergraduate research is an integral component of education in BCMB, affording undergraduates the opportunity to gain skills and experience that will be valuable in any career path. We offer BCB research experience, including summer research opportunities for interested undergraduate students.

Affiliation

We are fortunate to have a local Undergraduate Affiliate Network (UAN) of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). This undergraduate honor society hosts events and outreach activities. To learn more, contact the faculty sponsor, Elias Fernandez.
